MLWGS Students For Liberty is a nonpartisan educational organization dedicated to encouraging the study of the ideal of a society of free individuals, through promoting the benefits of free markets, civil society, and individual liberty.
We accomplish this goal through open discussion that bars no one from participating, weekly meetings where the latest topics of interest are discussed, book based discussions by leading authors and philosophers on the subject of liberty, inviting guest speakers to events all members of the MLWGS community are encouraged to attend, sponsoring key events throughout the school year like Mock Elections and Constitution Bowl, and through this website that aims to make available resources for all those interested in their own personal study of liberty.
But enough of the official constitutional talk. So, what are we and why are we meeting Wednesdays? Well, quite simply, we’re students (and faculty!) interested in studying Liberty. What it is, why it’s important, and by extension, how do we reconcile our liberties with those of others? That’s where questions about the proper role of government come in. How much liberty, if any, can the government restrict to protect the interests of others? How does it restrict it if we accept the premise that some liberties can be restricted? These are just some of the questions we seek to answer. We all have different bacgrounds, and by no means are of the same or even similar political views. Supporting Liberty doesn’t mean you have to support candidate X over candidate Y. We care about history and philosophy and every study in between because Liberty is about your individual freedom to control your own life. That’s what drives us.
We’re simply a group of kids who love life enough to question it. You’re welcome to join us.
